Types of Addictions

An addiction is a condition in which a person has an uncontrollable need to use a particular substance or activity. The word addiction is used to describe both physiological and psychological dependence, although it is sometimes used more narrowly to refer only to physical dependence. In medicine, the term addiction is often used interchangeably with dependence. A person may be addicted to something because of a genetic predisposition to addiction, but that does not mean he or she is physically dependent on the drug or activity. A person can also become addicted to an activity or substance simply by being exposed to it over a period of time. There are many different types of addictions. Some of the most common include alcoholism, nicotine addiction, compulsive gambling, drug abuse, eating disorders, sexual addiction, shopping addiction, internet addiction, video game addiction, and workaholism.

Addictions are usually classified according to their primary drug or activity of abuse. There are also many other classifications that can be made depending on the severity of the addiction, its impact on the person’s life, and the methods used to treat the addiction. Many people are addicted to drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes. It is estimated that at least 10 million Americans have a serious problem with drugs. Most of these people are under the age of 30, and nearly all of them are male. The most common drug of abuse is marijuana, followed by cocaine and then amphetamines.

Alcoholism is another very common type of addiction. Alcoholism is a serious problem for many people. If you have a family history of alcoholism, or if your friends and relatives have been diagnosed as alcoholics, you should talk to your doctor about getting help for your addiction. Some people who drink too much alcohol suffer from a medical condition known as alcoholic liver disease. This disease can lead to severe damage to the liver and eventually death.

Nicotine addiction is also a very common form of addiction. About 20 percent of the U.S. population is addicted to tobacco. Smoking is responsible for the deaths of 480,000 Americans each year. If you smoke, you should try to quit.

Drug abuse is another very common type of problem. About 2 million people in the United States abuse prescription drugs, including pain relievers, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills. If you are abusing prescription drugs, you should talk to your physician about how to stop.

Eating disorders are another very common type of addiction that affects women more than men. Eating disorders include bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.

Sexual addiction is another type of addiction that is becoming increasingly common. Sexual addiction involves a person having an uncontrollable desire to engage in sexual behavior even though it causes him or her significant distress.

Shopping addiction is another type of addiction. People who have shopping addiction spend a lot of money and time on things they don’t really need. They may shop just to get away from themselves, or they may shop compulsively to fill a void in their lives.

Video game addiction is another type of addiction, and one that is increasing in popularity. Video games can be addictive because they offer a fun way to escape from everyday problems. Video game addicts may spend up to 40 hours a week playing their games.

Workaholism is another common type of addiction. Workaholics work long hours and often neglect their personal relationships and health. They are often exhausted and depressed when they get home. Workaholics may also be obsessive about work. They may spend a lot of time thinking about work or working.
